Virginia Tech views admissions wholistically, meaning we recognize that you are more than a line on your resume or a number on your trascript. When reviewing applications, we thus consider many aspects of your application, including your work experience, community involvement, service, leadership, and any barriers you have dealt with while pursuing your career goals. With this in mind, we invite you to apply to our online ms in ag and applied economics program. Please find some helpful tips for preparing your application below.

What you need to apply

Please ensure that you prepare the following materials to successfully complete the online application via Virginia Tech's Graduate School webpage.

  • Current resume
  • A scanned copy of official transcripts from all universities or colleges where you earned a degree
    • Virginia Tech students do not need to submit official transcripts
    • Students with degrees from universities outside the U.S. will need to submit a report from a credential evaluation service and a translation into English if necessary. See additional details on the Apply Now page.
  • Three letters of recommendation, to be submitted electronically
  • Academic and professional goals statement (as required for all Virginia Tech graduate students)
    • Applicants are asked to provide a 1 - 2 page, double-spaced personal statement which includes the following:
      • Why do you want to undertake graduate work now?
      • Why at Virginia Tech?
      • What do you expect to derive from your program of study?
      • What do you expect to contribute as a student and subsequently as a member of the profession?
  • TOEFL, if necessary
  • A non-refundable $75 application fee

Please note that GMAT/GRE test scores are not required to apply to our online master of ag and applied economics.

Admissions information

The Virginia Tech Graduate School requires applicants to have a 3.0 GPA or higher from an accredited university to receive unrestricted admission into a Virginia Tech Graduate Program. Please find more information on admissions requirements below.

Regular Admission

Candidates who meet our admissions criteria including an undergraduate or graduate GPA of 3.0 or higher from an accredited university will be granted admission to the online MS program as a Regular Status student with no restrictions. Students must maintain a 3.0 or better cumulative GPA to maintain Regular Status.

Provisional Admission

Candidates who meet our admissions criteria but whose undergraduate or graduate GPA is below the minimum of 3.0, but above 2.75, may qualify for provisional admission. The applicant must demonstrate other experience or qualifications that show the potential to undertake graduate study. Upon successful completion of four foundation courses (earning a B or better in each course) the student is changed to Regular Status.

Commonwealth Status

Candidates who meet our admissions criteria, but whose undergraduate and/or graduate GPA falls below a 2.75 may qualify for admission as a Commonwealth Campus student. Commonwealth Campus admittance into the Online Master of Ag and Applied Economics Program is limited, and granted at the discretion of the Program Director upon review for regular admission. A Commonwealth Campus student will be allowed to take four foundation courses and upon successful completion (earning a B or better in each course) the student will be invited to reapply for Regular Admission. While in Commonwealth status, a student is ineligible for Financial Aid.
